MBA CET Topper’s Success Story: How Jaydeep Scored 99.88%ile & Secured JBIMS

Success in the MBA CET isn’t just about intelligence—it’s about strategy, perseverance, and making the right choices at the right time. In this edition of The Topper’s Edge, we dive into the journey of Jaydeep, who cracked CET with an astounding 99.88 percentile and secured a coveted seat at JBIMS. From his academic background to the critical decisions he made, his story is one of resilience and calculated risk-taking.

Jaydeep’s Background: The Leap from Statistics to Business

Jaydeep’s academic journey began with a BSc in Statistics from CASC College, which he completed in 2021. His initial career took him into product management, where he worked in both edtech and fintech firms. But something was missing.

“I realized that to truly grow in my career, I needed to enhance my business skills. That’s when I decided to focus on the MBA entrance exams.”

Determined to break into a top-tier business school, Jaydeep set his sights on MBA CET as his primary goal, although he also appeared for CAT, IIFT, and XAT.

Three Attempts, One Goal: The JBIMS Dream

Jaydeep’s CET journey spanned three attempts, showcasing his consistent improvement:

  • 2021: 93.6 percentile (First Attempt)
  • 2022: 99.36 percentile (Second Attempt)
  • 2023: 99.88 percentile (Final Attempt – JBIMS!)

His first two attempts were learning experiences, but Jaydeep knew that if he pushed just a little more, he could reach the topmost B-schools in the country.

“Each attempt taught me something valuable. I knew I had to bridge the gap, and that’s what I worked on in my final attempt.”

Challenges & The Unfair Advantage of Top B-Schools

One of the major realizations that pushed Jaydeep to aim for JBIMS was the asymmetry in opportunities between top-tier institutions and others.

“When I graduated, I saw a huge difference in the kind of jobs available to students from IITs, IIMs, and JBIMS compared to others. Many job descriptions explicitly mentioned ‘Tier 1 institutes only.’ I wanted to enter that exclusive circle.”

At top B-schools, access to premium job opportunities, corporate competitions, and high-impact networking makes a significant difference. Jaydeep knew this and made sure he wasn’t locked out of the best career prospects.

Weakest Section? Here’s How He Overcame It

Every topper has a weak link. For Jaydeep, it was Logical Reasoning (LR) & Data Interpretation (DI).

“Unlike Quant or Verbal, where concepts are structured, LR puzzles felt completely different. You can’t just memorize formulas—you need smart strategies to solve them quickly.”

Here’s how he tackled it:

  • Focused on tricks and shortcuts – particularly for Blood Relations, Input-Output, and Matrix-based puzzles.
  • Built a mental framework to solve problems in under one minute.
  • Used visual methods (like diagrams) for complex reasoning problems.

By refining his approach and speed, he turned his weakest section into a scoring advantage.

The Shift in Strategy That Changed Everything

MBA CET isn’t the same exam every year. Over time, sectional timing changed and jumbled questions became the norm. Jaydeep had to adapt his test-taking approach.

“The biggest change was context-switching. You might be solving a tough Quant problem one second and then a Reading Comprehension question the next. I had to train my brain to switch gears instantly.”

Here’s what he did differently in his final attempt:

  • Improved time efficiency – Quick mental calculations (squares, cubes, fractions) instead of writing everything down.
  • Took more mixed-section mocks to practice jumbled formats.
  • Focused on solving under time pressure – Simulated the real exam experience.

This helped him maximize his score and handle unpredictable paper patterns.

Taking a Risk: Quitting His Job for CET

One of the boldest moves Jaydeep made was quitting his job in October 2022 to focus full-time on CET preparation.

“I was on the verge of burnout while working full-time. I had to give my 100%. But I knew it was a gamble—if I failed, I’d have a big career gap to explain.”

Should You Quit Your Job for CET?

It depends on your circumstances. While it worked for Jaydeep, it’s not the right decision for everyone. If you’re considering it, think about:

  • Your financial stability
  • Your progress in previous attempts – If you’re close to your target, full-time prep might help.
  • Backup plans – What if CET doesn’t work out? Do you have other options in your bucket ?

How The Top Percentile Transformed Jaydeep’s Preparation

Jaydeep joined TTP’s MBA CET program around December-January, just a few months before the exam. Here’s what helped him the most:

“Before joining, I was studying from multiple sources, and it was all over the place. The mocks really helped me refine my speed and accuracy. I didn’t have to waste time looking for study material—everything was structured, and the strategies were already laid out.”

What worked for him?

Structured, easily accessible material – No need to hunt for resources.
